The best time to visit Bruny Island is December to April, when the cruise
runs three times a day and the days are at their warmest. Winter is colder and wetter, but
every tour still runs and the roads are quieter. Choose your season first, then your
Bruny Island day tours.
Summer: December to February
Summer is the warm season, though warm is relative this far south. At the Cape Bruny
lighthouse, February averages a high of 18.6 °C and January 18.4 °C. It is also the
driest stretch of the year, with February the driest month at 55.8 mm.
From 1 December the cruise adds a 10am and a 1:30pm departure to its 11am. That gives you
the most choice of the year. Book early if your dates are fixed, and bring a warm layer
anyway: the wind at 3pm averages over 30 km/h in December and January.
Autumn: March to May
March is still mild, with highs of 17.7 °C, and the extra cruises run until 28 April.
Easter falls in this season, and the Parks and Wildlife Service warns that the ferry is at
its busiest then. Allow extra time at Kettering if you travel over the long weekend.
By May the highs drop to 13.5 °C and rain falls on about 12 days of the month. The
afternoons are calmer than in spring, which helps on the open water. From 29 April the
cruise is back to its one daily sailing at 11am.
Winter: June to August
Winter is cold, wet and quiet. July is the coldest month, with highs of 11.3 °C and
lows of 6.2 °C, and the wettest, with 93.9 mm. Rain falls on about 13 days in each of
July and August.
Every tour still runs. The cruise sails at 11am only, and the land tours keep the full day.
Winter misses both peaks the official advice names, Easter and the summer timetable.
Dress for the Southern Ocean, not for Hobart.

Spring: September to November
Spring warms slowly. Highs climb from 13.3 °C in September to 15.7 °C in November,
and the rain eases. The catch is the wind: the 3pm average rises to 31.9 km/h in November,
the windiest month of the year at the lighthouse.
The cruise runs only at 11am until 1 December. If you want an afternoon sailing, wait for
summer, or pick a land tour that keeps you out of the wind.
Cruise departures by season
The 3-hour wilderness cruise is the one product whose timetable changes with the season.
Pennicott publishes this timetable for its sailings from Adventure Bay:

The cruise runs every day except Christmas Day, in all weather, though the operator may
cancel when the sea is unsafe. The day tours from Hobart that include the cruise are timed
around the 11am sailing, so they run all year too.
Know your season?
Compare the tours by what they include, when they leave Hobart, and how late you can cancel.
Little penguins and shearwaters: at their rookeries at The Neck, after
dark. The day tours are gone by then.
Whales: southern right and humpback whales pass on their migration and
sometimes enter Adventure Bay. No source gives dates, so treat a sighting as a bonus.
Fur seals: at The Friars, on the cruise, in any month.
Dusk is when wildlife is most active on the roads too, so if you drive yourself, plan
to be off the gravel by then. See the roads and wildlife
guide.
Sunset at the lighthouse
The lighthouse grounds are open to walkers at any hour, but cars can only drive in from
9:30am to 4:30pm. Sunset tours of the tower can be arranged on request with Cape Bruny
Lighthouse Tours. No day tour stays that late, so a sunset visit means staying on the
island.
Questions about timing
When is the best time to visit?
Any month for the day tours. Summer brings the full cruise timetable, with departures at 10am and 1:30pm from 1 December to 28 April as well as the 11am that runs all year. Winter is colder and wetter, so dress in layers.
Does the cruise run in winter?
Yes. The 11am cruise runs all year, every day except Christmas Day, according to Pennicott. The 10am and 1:30pm cruises run only from 1 December to 28 April.
What is the wettest month on Bruny Island?
July, with 93.9 mm on average at the Cape Bruny lighthouse and rain on about 13 days. February is the driest, with 55.8 mm on about 7 days.
When is the ferry queue worst?
Leaving Kettering between 8am and 10am, and leaving the island between 4pm and 5pm, according to Bruny Tourism. The Parks and Wildlife Service adds Easter as a busy time to allow for.
Do tours run in bad weather?
The cruise runs in all weather, but the operator may cancel it when conditions are unsafe. On the land tours the guide sets the order of the day around the weather.
Can I visit the lighthouse at sunset?
The grounds are open to walkers at any hour, but cars can only drive in from 9:30am to 4:30pm. Sunset tours of the tower can be arranged on request with Cape Bruny Lighthouse Tours.
Where these facts come from
Temperature, rain and wind are the Bureau of Meteorology's climate statistics for Cape
Bruny Lighthouse (094010), checked 21 September 2026. The cruise times are Pennicott's own; the ferry queues
are Bruny Tourism's; Easter, the wildlife and the lighthouse hours are the Parks and
Wildlife Service's.
Ten hours from the Hobart waterfront with a three-hour cruise along the sea cliffs, windproof jackets, morning tea, lunch and the ferry in the fare. You make your own way to the wharf; the bus drops you at your hotel.
A tasting day from the Hobart waterfront: the lookout over the isthmus, an hour's lunch by the beach, and honey and chocolate stops, with the food and drink listed in the fare. Pickup from select hotels can be arranged.
Three days from Hobart: the mountain, a wildlife sanctuary, the island as far as the lighthouse grounds, then Port Arthur and a coastal cave. Hotel pickup and both admissions are in the fare, lunch is not, and check at booking whether you need your own park pass.
