Bruny Island Tours

Bruny Island Tours: Frequently Asked Questions

Fares, the ferry, the parks pass, the lighthouse, the weather and where the tours start, answered from the operators' own listings and the island's official pages. Ready to book Bruny Island guided tours? The answers below settle most of what you need first.

Two answers matter more than the rest. First, the island has no gate: you pay for the ferry by the vehicle, for a pass in South Bruny National Park, and for any tour. Second, the fares cover very different things. Some pay for lunch, the tastings, the Parks Pass and a climb up Cape Bruny Lighthouse; others leave all of that to you. Every tour card says which.

Do you need a ticket to visit Bruny Island?
No. There is no Bruny Island entry ticket, because the island has no gate. You pay for the ferry from Kettering, which is charged per vehicle while foot passengers travel free, a parks pass for South Bruny National Park, and any tour or cruise you book.
How much does a Bruny Island tour cost?
From $120 for the hike with tastings and $128-$130 for a guided day from Hobart, to $199-$210 for the all-inclusive food and cruise days. The cruise alone from Adventure Bay is $135-$137, and the private charter is $1,051 for a group of up to four.
Is the ferry included in the tour?
On the day tours from Hobart the crossing is part of the day, and most fares name the ferry among what they include. The cruise from Adventure Bay does not: you drive yourself to the island unless you book the Hobart option where it is offered.
Is the parks pass included?
On the Bruny Island Safaris days, the Tassie Tours day, the private Discovery day and the 2- and 4-day tours, yes. The 3-day tour and the shore excursion list a pass and also tell you to buy one, so check at booking. Elsewhere, buy your own if you drive.
Can I cancel for free?
Most fares refund in full up to 24 hours before the start. The hike needs two days' notice, and the private charter is non-refundable and cannot be changed. Each card states its own terms.
Which Bruny Island tour is best?
It depends on the day you want. The most booked is the all-inclusive food day with the lighthouse climb, rated 4.8 from 3,179 reviews. The Tassie Tours day puts the walks first for less, and the 3-hour cruise from Adventure Bay is the top-rated way to see the sea cliffs and seals.
Which tours climb Cape Bruny Lighthouse?
Only the Bruny Island Safaris days include the guided climb. The private Discovery day offers a lighthouse tour as one of three afternoon choices, and the Tassie Tours days stop at the grounds without going up.
Is there a boat tour around Bruny Island?
Yes: the 3-hour wilderness cruise from Adventure Bay, along the sea cliffs of South Bruny to the seals at The Friars. Book it on its own and drive to Adventure Bay, or as a full day from Hobart with the bus, the ferry and lunch.
Is there a private tour?
Yes. The private charter takes a group of up to four in its own vehicle, priced per group, and the all-inclusive Discovery day is private too, priced per person with a minimum of two.
Can I combine Bruny Island with Port Arthur?

Where do the tours start?
Most in central Hobart, at the Tasmanian Travel and Information Centre on Davey Street, Franklin Wharf or Princes Wharf No. 1, and several collect you from your hotel. The cruise alone starts on the island, at Adventure Bay.
What time do tours leave Hobart?
Between 6:55am and about 8:40am, depending on the tour, and most are back between 5pm and 6pm. Hotel pickups run earlier than the listed start, so confirm yours the evening before.
Is there a bridge to Bruny Island?
No, there is no bridge to Bruny Island. The SeaLink ferry from Kettering to Roberts Point is the only way across, and the crossing takes 15 to 20 minutes.
What is The Neck?
The narrow isthmus that joins North and South Bruny. The steps up to Truganini Lookout above it give the view along both beaches, and nearly every day tour stops there.
When is the best time to visit?
Any month for the day tours. Summer brings the full cruise timetable, with departures at 10am and 1:30pm from 1 December to 28 April as well as the 11am that runs all year. Winter is colder and wetter, so dress in layers.
How far ahead should I book?
As soon as your dates are fixed, and earliest around Easter, when the Parks and Wildlife Service says the ferry is at its busiest. Most fares refund up to 24 hours before, so booking early costs little if plans change.
How much is the parks pass?
A daily pass is $49.15 per vehicle for up to eight people, or $24.55 per person if you arrive by bus, bike or on foot, in Australian dollars. Children under 5 go free. Those are the Parks and Wildlife Service's fees from 1 July 2026.
Do foot passengers pay for the ferry?
No. SeaLink charges the fare per vehicle, and passengers travel free. You do not need to book a set departure.
Are the prices per person?

Is there a walking tour?
The Tours Tasmania hike walks about 8 km return to the Bruny Arch on the Cape Queen Elizabeth Track, then stops for tastings. The Tassie Tours days add short rainforest walks and the climb to the lookout above The Neck.
Are there penguin tours?
No tour sells penguin viewing. Little penguins nest at The Neck and come ashore at dusk, after the day tours have left for Hobart, so seeing them means staying on the island.
Can I see white wallabies?
Often, but it is never guaranteed. The Parks and Wildlife Service says they feed in the paddocks at dusk near the Fluted Cape entrance, and the guides on several land tours look for them along the way.
Can children come on the tours?
On most, with an adult. The hike's minimum age is 8, and children under 5 cannot climb the lighthouse stairs on the Bruny Island Safaris days.
Are the tours wheelchair accessible?
No listing says it is, and the ones that answer the question say no. The island's roads are partly gravel and most stops involve steps or uneven paths, so ask the operator before you book.
Is there a tour for cruise-ship passengers?
Yes. The Tassie Tours shore excursion collects you at the Hobart cruise terminal, and the Bespoke Signature day picks up from your ship. The cruise operator says its wilderness cruise does not suit a shore excursion because of ship arrival times.
Is lunch included?
On the food days, the cruise days from Hobart and the private Discovery day, yes. The Tassie Tours days, the hike, the Wild Escapes day, the charter and the cruise alone leave lunch at your cost, and the Tassie Tours day stops at the Bruny Hotel for it.
What should I wear?
Layers and a rain jacket, even in summer, and closed shoes for the walks. The cruise crew hand out waterproofs, but it is still cold on the open water.
Do tours run in bad weather?
The cruise runs in all weather, but the operator may cancel it when conditions are unsafe. On the land tours the guide sets the order of the day around the weather.
Will I get seasick on the cruise?
It is a fast, open boat on the Southern Ocean, and the ride can be rough. If you are prone to it, take something before you board.
Do the tours pick up from an Airbnb?
Tassie Tours pick up only from hotels within 5 km of the Hobart CBD, not from Airbnbs or private homes, so you may need to walk to a pickup point. Other operators meet at a set point in the city.
Can I bring luggage?
Not on the Bruny Island Safaris bus or the hike, which take day bags only. Leave your suitcase at your hotel.
How often does the ferry run?
