What a walking tour of Bruny Island is
Two different days sell themselves as walking. One is a real hike: about 8 km return over
three hours on part of the Cape Queen Elizabeth Track, out to a sea arch. The other is a
sightseeing day with short walks built in: a rainforest track, the steps up to the lookout and
a stroll at the lighthouse.
Both cross on the ferry, and both stop at the producers in the afternoon. What changes is how
long you spend on your feet, and how fit you need to be. The hike asks for a moderate level of
fitness. The sightseeing days suit almost anyone who can climb steps.
Why choose a walking tour
You get off the bus
A lot of a Bruny Island day is driving. A walking day gives you real time on the tracks: three
hours on the hike, and several short walks on the sightseeing days.
You reach places a car does not
The hike takes you past Mars Bluff and along Miles Beach to the Bruny Arch. The rainforest
walks on the sightseeing days lead to a waterfall.
You pay less
The hike is the lowest fare here at $120, and the guided sightseeing days cost
$130. You buy your own food instead.
The climb to the lookout is included
Every walking day stops at the isthmus. The listing counts 279 steps up to Truganini
Lookout, and the view runs along both beaches.
A full hike vs a day of short walks

If you would rather eat than walk, the Bruny Island food tours pay for lunch and the tastings. For the
animals you might meet on the tracks, see Bruny Island wildlife tours.
If you would rather walk on your own, the
best walks on Bruny Island run from a
40-minute rainforest loop to an 18 km circuit.
What you get, and what you don't
- The hike: eco-certified guides and the ferry. Meals and drinks are not in
the fare, and there are few places to buy food, so pack lunch.
- The guided walking day: hotel pickup within 5 km of the centre, the ferry
and the Parks Pass. Food and drinks are yours to buy.
- The shore excursion: pickup at the cruise terminal, a guide and a park
pass line that also tells you to buy one. Check at booking.
- None of them: climbs inside the lighthouse. The sightseeing days stop at
the grounds.
The hike: 8 km to a sea arch
Three hours on foot along beaches to the arch, then the lookout, a beach stop and the producers. The ferry is in the fare; pack a lunch.

Planning a walking tour
- Budget: $120 for the hike and $130 for a guided
sightseeing day, plus lunch.
- Be early: the hike collects you at 6:55am at the Davey Street information
centre. The walking day's first pickup is at 7:20am.
- Wear proper shoes: closed shoes with grip, and a rain jacket in every
season.
- Book two days out: the hike needs two days' notice to refund, not 24
hours.

walks.
Who should choose something else
- If steps are hard for you. Even the easy days climb to the lookout. A
cruise asks less of your legs; see Bruny Island boat tours.
- If you want lunch served. None of these pays for it. The Bruny Island food tours do.
- If you want the lighthouse climb. Only the Safaris food days go up.
- If you have under-8s and want the hike. The minimum age is 8; the
sightseeing days take younger children.

Frequently asked questions
How hard is the walking?
On the sightseeing days, easy: short tracks and the steps up to the lookout over the isthmus. The hike is moderate, about 8 km return over three hours, with 279 steps on the lookout climb.
Can children do the walking tours?
The hike takes walkers from age 8. The guided sightseeing days take children, and one parent wrote that a seven-year-old followed the guide all day.
Do I need to bring lunch on a walking tour?
On the hike, yes, because food on the island is limited and the fare includes none. On the sightseeing days you buy lunch at a stop on the way.
Is there a walking tour?
The Tours Tasmania hike walks about 8 km return to the Bruny Arch on the Cape Queen Elizabeth Track, then stops for tastings. The Tassie Tours days add short rainforest walks and the climb to the lookout above
The Neck.
Do the tours pick up from an Airbnb?
Tassie Tours pick up only from hotels within 5 km of the Hobart CBD, not from Airbnbs or private homes, so you may need to walk to a pickup point. Other operators meet at a set point in the city.
Is the parks pass included?
On the Bruny Island Safaris days, the Tassie Tours day, the private Discovery day and the 2- and 4-day tours, yes. The 3-day tour and the shore excursion list a pass and also tell you to buy one, so check at booking. Elsewhere, buy your own if you drive.
What is The Neck?
The narrow isthmus that joins North and South Bruny. The steps up to Truganini Lookout above it give the view along both beaches, and nearly every day tour stops there.
